What is the Sheridan Transportation Planning Study?

In keeping with broader comprehensive planning goals, the City of Sheridan commissioned a transportation planning study to address multi-modal transportation alternatives for responsible community growth. A long-range transportation plan provides a framework that guides city staff and elected officials through the following tasks:

  • Identifying and prioritizing roadways to be updated, repaired, or rebuilt
  • Preserving corridors to minimize future right-of-way acquisition costs
  • Consistently and systematically approaching traffic problem-solving
  • Obtaining funding for roadway improvement projects

Work Completed to Date

The Transportation Planning Study began with an information-gathering phase, in which data was gathered related to the movement of various kinds of traffic in and around the community. The project team also incorporated information and recommendations from previous studies and master plan documents, such as the West Corridor Study, Downtown Streetscape Master Plan, and the Sheridan Pathways Master Plan.

The study team then looked at future growth potential for the area, typically considering what the community might look like at populations of 30,000, 50,000 and 100,000 (maximum density within the urban growth boundary).

Next Steps

Taking into consideration the information gathered during this information-gathering phase, a draft recommended transportation grid was developed to serve as a starting point for discussion during the public involvement process. Throughout February, March and April, 2008, the City and project team conducted a community-wide public involvement process to consider the preliminary recommendations developed in Phase One of the transportation planning process. After meetings had been held in each of eight focus areas throughout the Sheridan area and public comments incorporated into the study, the draft study report was posted to this website for public review and comment. Click here to review the draft study report and submit your comments.
